Job Function Summary
Involves conceptualization, planning, designing and implementing complete and integrated information technology solutions for campus, medical center or Office of the President initiatives, departments or the entire campus, medical center or Office of the President. Work is based on implementing the vision of top management to establish IT conceptual architecture that is time independent but allows for implementation of specific technologies over time with ability to smoothly transition technology changes. Demonstrates keen understanding of departmental, campuswide, medical center, Office of the President, institution-wide and/or multi-organizational needs and long-term goals. Researches and prototypes emerging technologies and approaches. Works on issues that impact project success or address future concepts, products or technologies. Understands and coordinates with campus, medical center or Office of the President initiatives when appropriate, as well as various IT technology standards, best practices and strategies for infrastructure growth. Often serves as consultant to related management efforts.
The Architect of High Performance Computing (Architect of HPC) will report to the Director of Research Informatics and will play a key role in the organization's critically important efforts to leverage informatics, data and analytics to drive meaningful and actionable insight for basic and clinical researchers. The Architect of HPC will serve as the key HPC technical subject matter expert and will be accountable to central computational organizations and work actively with other HPC architects and administrators in relevant academic departments and centers.

The Architect of HPC will be a technical leader in helping define, evolve and implement the organization's HPC strategy and plans. The Architect of HPC will need to understand the HPC requirements of the institution and translate the requirements into actionable projects. More specifically, the Architect of HPC will be responsible for:

•  Developing a deep understanding of the needs of faculty with regard to use of technology for enabling successful research.
•   Supporting faculty PI’s in specifying systems in support of their grant proposals. This may include a requirement to write related sections of the proposal.
•   Staying up to date with the latest offerings from both hardware and cloud service vendors, including new architectures, such as parallel computing, SSD’s and GPU's.
•    Assessing currently available landscape of research computing systems/services against faculty need; and facilitating greater use of existing services, as well as creating new services as needed.
•   Being the key technical subject matter expert in developing business models / recharges in support of the shared HPC system and services.
•   Reporting to the HPC/Research governance committee on all technical and operational aspects of the shared environments.
•   Developing (in coordination with Enterprise Information Security) and monitoring security policies associated with the HPC and Science DMZ networks.
•   Selecting, deploying and supporting systems in the organization's data centers in the SF geography; or overseeing those functions in the case of remote deployments.
•   Providing training and guidance for how faculty, researchers and students can best use available HPC services.
•   In the case of cloud-based hosting, this person will be the go-to point for various configurations offered by the vendor (typically AWS, but could include Azure and Google offerings), including regular optimization for performance and costs.  
•   Being present at key architectural meetings within the University and also with partners.
There are significant State and Federal regulations in place for research, clinical trials, and the information used in the research process. The Architect of HPC must be fully aware of these laws and be accountable, such that the HPC environments comply with relevant Federal and State regulations.

Recognized organization-wide expert. Has significant impact and influence on organizational policy and program development. Regularly leads projects of critical importance to the organization; these projects carry substantial consequences of success or failure. Directs programs with organization-wide impact (or may have impact beyond the University) that include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources. Significant barriers to entry exist at this level.

Custom Scope 
Having wide-ranging experience, applies IT architecture concepts to resolve the most complex issues with campus / medical center / OP-wide, institution-wide and / or multi-institutional impact. Has responsibility for the stewardship of the campus / medical center / OP overall IT architecture and / or is recognized as the campus / medical center / OP top expert in one or more technology areas of high criticality to a large scale enterprise architecture. Works on most complex issues with little or no campus / medical center / OP precedent where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors.
This position will report into the Academic Research System team.   This group is responsible for the development and support of the data and systems that support the organization's research mission.  
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Expertise with high-performance compute clusters and sequencing cores.  
•  Working knowledge of HPC schedulers and distributed/parallel file systems and underlying IT systems.        
•  Experience with cloud based solutions - such as Amazon RDS/AWS’s, Microsoft Azure, …
•  Understanding of best practices around advanced cloud-based solutions, and how to migrate existing workloads to the cloud.        
•  Expertise with clinical data including: patient encounters, laboratory, pharmacy, diagnostic imaging, vitals, clinical notes.
•  Experience with HIPPA and other Federal and State regulations relating to research data usage.
•  Demonstrated experience designing, implementing and supporting large-scale informatics platforms for research projects and/or clinical data.  
 Nice to haves:
•  Experience in informatics disciplines, such as: database and system design; clinical and research data integration; medical terminologies and ontologies; and healthcare informatics standards.      
•  Experience with bio repositories, genomic and genetic databases, and big data platforms  
•  Experience deploying HPC use cases in Healthcare and/or Research Environments          
•  Experience with Hadoop        
•  Experience working in academic research environments      
Education/Experience Req / Pref

A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, CIS/MIS or equivalent degree from an accredited four-year institution - Req
Nice to Haves 

•  5+ year’s experience designing, deploying and administering HPC environments - Req
•  Medical Center and/or Academic research systems experience - Pref
•  AWS Certification, e.g. AWS Solutions Architect Associate - Pref
